From time to time, you will find it necessary to repair a hole in a wall in your Fort Lauderdale real estate home or condo. From a small hole made from hanging large pictures, to larger defects caused by any number of means, this guide will enable you to fix them all by yourself.
Most drywall today is made from gypsum plaster wrapped in paper layers. The plaster often has additives that increase mildew and fire resistance. Regular drywall come in different thicknesses ranging from ¼” to ¾”.
Repairing A Small Hole
1. Sand the area that you are going to repair. We like to use coarse sandpaper (#60) for this step. It is important to sand the immediate area around the hole so that the new joint compound will adhere.
2. Use a quality grade joint compound to fill the hole. We prefer to use a 4″ spreader for this task. Joint compound can be found at your local hardware or home improvement store. For small repair jobs we recommend a product that is premixed and ready to apply. Apply the compound evenly and make sure the hole is filled.
3. When you are sure the area has dried completely, use a fine sandpaper (#180) to smooth the area to match the existing wall.
Repair A Larger Hole
1. For larger holes (up to 6″) you can repair the defect by applying a drywall patch, or bandage. If you have extra drywall laying around the house, you can make a patch. For purposes of this article, we will assume you do not.
2. You will need to go to your local home improvement store and buy a drywall patch. Holes in walls are a somewhat common occurrence and many companies make ready made patch products for your convenience.
3. Prepare the area by using a keyhole saw to make the area a square then sand the area as described above.
4. You will need to cut the patch as described by the manufacturer to match the hole size you are repairing.
5. Make sure the adhesive is completely dried then apply a coat of joint compound over the entire area you just patched. Apply the compound liberally, but smooth.
6. Once the area is completely dry, use fine sandpaper, as mentioned above, to smooth the area to match the existing wall.

Any holes larger than 6″ require special skills and tools and we recommend calling a licensed repair professional or trusted handyman.
