Most homeowners today have decided that some improvements around the house can be done easily in a weekend. One of those projects is painting a room in your Fort Lauderdale real estate home or condo.
One of our previous articles in our home improvement and repair series discussed some general painting tips and tools of the trade you will need to complete a project of this type. We urge you to review that article before continuing.
Choose Your Color
The first step, and arguably the most important, is choosing the color for the room you are painting. While choosing the color is a matter of personal taste, there are a few things you will want to keep in mind before you make your selection.
1. Try to have an overall idea of your room decoration. It is a good idea to choose a color that is already present in fabrics or furniture that will be inside the room.
2. Dark colors are…. Well, they are dark. Be wary in choosing especially dark colors for your entire room, even if you have lots of windows and natural sunlight. The usual approach to a dark color is painting one wall darker and using it as an accent to the rest of the room.
3. Beware of light pink. Unless you are painting a nursery for a new baby girl (even if you are), be careful about choosing pink for your wall color. Pinks, while a favorite color for some, are notorious for looking like Pepto-Bismol when on large areas.
4. Yellow is harder to cover.
5. When in doubt, go neutral off-white.
Prepare The Room
1. Start your painting preparations by moving you furniture to the center of the room, or out of the room is best.
2. Cover your furniture with drop cloths
3. Use painters tape and tape the edges of your baseboards and door trim.
4. Make sure your step ladder has access to every wall and has enough room to open completely.
Paint One Wall At A Time
1. Pick one wall to start with and do not move on until that wall has a complete coat of paint.
2. Begin the painting by using your trim brush to paint near the baseboards, ceilings, corners, and any trim work.
3. Make sure your brush strokes are in the same direction and there are no drips
4. When the trim is done, but still dry, use the roller to paint the rest of the wall.
5. When rolling on paint, start from the left and work to the right by going straight up and down, and applying constant pressure.
6. Once one wall is complete, check for any drips and use your trim brush to remove them, then move to the next wall.
7. Wait until the wall is dried completely, then examine to determine if another coat is needs. If needed, repeat.
Cleanup and Storage
1. Once you are done with the can of paint, make sure the lid is secured firmly to keep paint from drying out.
2. If you are going to be applying a new coat of paint in the next day or two, you can store your paint brush and roller in a Ziploc bag and put them in the refrigerator.
3. If you are going to store your brush for a longer period, make sure you wash it thoroughly or it will become stiff with dried paint and be un-usable. Roller covers are made to be disposable and should not be stored for long period once used.
4. Make sure all paint is stored by manufactures guidelines to make sure it is preserved for the longest period of time possible. It is best to store paint at temperatures around 70 degrees, away from direct sunlight, and away from water.
