Long Time Coming But Finally The Miami Dolphins Traded Jason Taylor
July 20, 2008
It’s a sad day here in the Fort Lauderdale real estate area. Although it had been rumored for some time, the Miami Dolphins finally went ahead and did it. They traded the heart of our team. Jason Taylor, who has been literally Mr. Everything to the Dolphins has been traded today to the Washington Redskins.
In exchange we got plenty of value…no we actually didn’t. I was kidding to stop myself from crying. The Redskins gave the Dolphins a second-round pick in 2009 and a sixth-round choice in 2010 for Taylor. Chump change for the six-time Pro Bowl defensive end - who was the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Are you kidding me? We get basically the parenthetical “player to be named later” in exchange for a star. This is absolutely crazy. I mean I support BIll Parcells in re-building the team but this in effect was performing open hear surgery, taking out a good heart, and inserting a baboon’s heart. I don’t understand!
It appears that Taylor ticked off some of his teammates by spending his offseason on the TV show “Dancing With the Stars” rather than sweating it out with teammates. Did you see this guy on the show? He did not appear that he would have any problems getting into shape. I might add he looked mighty fine as it was.
The deal came about nine hours after starting defensive end Phillip Daniels was carted away from the practice field at Redskins Park with a season-ending left knee injury on Day 1 of training camp.
It also came only about 1½ hours after Washington executive vice president Vinny Cerrato told reporters: “We haven’t talked to anybody about anything.”
Cerrato said Taylor is expected to report to training camp on Monday.
“We’re fortunate there was a guy of that caliber on the market when somebody got hurt,” Cerrato said. “Normally, in most years, there’s not a guy of that caliber on the market.”
Funny, we were told he wasn’t being used as tradebait!
The 33-year-old Taylor has played 11 NFL seasons and he’s started every game each of the past eight years. He had 11 sacks during the 2007 season, giving him 117 over his career.
“His play speaks for itself. I think it’s easy to talk about Jason Taylor. He’s got statistics and everything else to back up everything that he’s done,” Cerrato said. Taylor has said he planned to play only one more season.
But Cerrato said Taylor has two years left on his contract and added: “I’m 100 percent positive he’ll play longer than one year.”
The Dolphins declined comment even after the Redskins announced the deal. [Did you really think they would have the ba#$s to stand up to the local media and tell them this bit of news?]
In the only statement regarding the trade, Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said, “Right now we’re not prepared to confirm that.”
Thanks for some great memories Jason! As for the Dolphins, thanks for nothing!
