Lobster Mini Season In The Fort Lauderdale Real Estate Market
July 25, 2008
Florida Lobster Mini Season begins and ends next weekend. Delicious Florida lobsters are a tasty treat that are available to divers within the short yet hugely popular 2 day mini season.
The lobster mini-season gives divers a 2 day sneak into the water to grab lobster within the legal limits before the commercial boats go set traps and start their fishing a week later.
Here in the Fort Lauderdale real estate market and throughout South Florida and the Florida Keys, this area is known as a hot bed of lobster mini-season activity for divers in shallow water. The natural and artificial reefs found off of the coast of Fort Lauderdale are home to these lobsters.
The lobster mini-season can also be very hectic as many boaters are anxious to get out on the water and only do so this time of year. Their boats may not be maintained and their boating / diving skills may not be up to par. For this reason it is best to be defensive minded and have safe outing.
The Mini-lobster, also known as the spiny lobster will have to endure the mini sport season which this year will fall on July 30th and 31st. The bag limits are 6 per person per day for Monroe County and Biscayne National Park, and 12 per person per day for the rest of Florida.
A recreational saltwater license and a crawfish permit are needed for harvest. Regular spiny lobster season is August 6 through March 31. The bag limit is 6 per person per day. Harvest of lobster is prohibited in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park during the sport season. Harvest is also prohibited during both the 2-day sport season and regular season in Everglades National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park, and no take areas in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Call (305) 852-7717 or visit http://floridakeys.noaa.gov for information about no take areas in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Please call the FWC Key West office at (305) 292-0311 or click here for lobster harvesting regulations for Monroe County. Recreational trapping of lobster is prohibited.
If you will be participating in mini lobster season remember to never dive alone, be safe on the water and we wish you a great time. And if you have have any extra lobsters, feel free to give me a call. Yummy!
