Fort Lauderdale News | Friday Night Lights An Issue

Lighting On Cardinal Gibbons High School Football Field At Issue. From the “Give Me A Break” department, neighbors of the high school located in the well to do Coral Ridge Country Club neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale are complaining about the light towers surrounding the gridiron.
Cardinal Gibbons High School, was established on September 5, 1961, and is a Roman Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory secondary school run by the Archdiocese of Miami.
In an effort to stop the lights from coming on local neighbors are organizing to attend a city board meeting where the school’s field lighting will meets its ultimate fate.
Residents of Coral Ridge Country Club Estates are upset about the towering football field lights at the school. The school installed the lights after receiving permission from the City of Fort Lauderdale to install them. The school spent about $250,000.00 to purchase and install the lights. Now, after the fact, after going through the proper channels it appears someone fumbled and in reviewing the city permit, city officials later realized the lights are too tall.
Two of the light standards are 95 feet tall, and two others are 65 feet tall. City of Fort Lauderdale code sets a height limit of 35 feet. So, now that the local commando’s are out in force with nothing better to do than stop the heinous Friday Night Light’s from shining…at least not so high in the sky…the city gave the high school three options:
- Lower the poles to the 35 foot limit
- Remove them completely
- Or, apply for a conditional use permit or a variance.
The school chose option number 3 rather than punt. By applying for a variance they have put their fate in the hands of City officials to decide what should happen. If they prevail then the City can waive the height limit, if they lose, they could be forced to remove them.
With the high school footbal season just weeks away, it is critical to Cardinal Gibbons to have this matter resolved as soon as possible. The hearing on this matter is scheduled for this Wednesday, August 13th, at 6:30PM at City Hall, 100 N. Andrews Ave. The public is welcome to attend.
Despite the jeering from a few bored homeowners who obviously have nothing better to do (Fort Lauderdale sure has it’s share of those), Coral Ridge is a great place to live and raise a family.
Coral Ridge is located just seconds to the beach and all that Fort Lauderdale has to offer.
The Coral Ridge neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale is an upscale waterfront community located in North East Fort Lauderdale between Sunrise Boulevard and Commercial Boulevard just west of the Intracoastal Waterway.
