Have You Tried A Mojito?
August 12, 2008
Mint, Lime, Sugar, Muddle, Ice, Bacardi Rum, Club Soda, Stir = Mojito! In what has quickly become the signature drink of South Florida, the Mojito is a very refreshing drink that can be made with a wide variety of recipes. The classic mojito is traditionally made of five ingredients:
- white rum
- sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice)
- lime
- Club Soda
- Mint leaves
Its combination of sweetness and refreshing citrus and mint flavors are intended to mask the potent kick of the rum, and have made this clear highball a popular summer drink.
When preparing a mojito, lime juice is added to the sugar and mint leaves. The mixture is then gently mashed with a muddler. The mint leaves should only be bruised to release the essential oils and must not be shredded.
Then the ice is added to the brim of the glass followed by the addition of the rum and topped off by the club soda. Then the mixture is briefly stirred to dissolve the sugar and to lift the mint sprigs up from the bottom for better presentation.
Here’s how you make the Classic Bacardi Rum Mojito:
I am partial to the Bacardi Rum based Mojito and the recipe for the Bacardi Mojito is as follows:
1.5 oz BACARDI Rum
12 fresh spearmint leaves
1/2 lime
7 oz club soda
2 tbsp. simple syrup (or sugar)
(or 4 tsp. sugar)
The best bar recipes then add these essential steps: toast, sip, and enjoy fine Bacardi mojitos with your friends.
Lately however I have been really digging the Watermelon Mojito. Like I said, there are a lot of different recipes and once you begin experimenting, who knows where you’ll end up.
I just want to add, if you are going to have some mojito’s, have some fun, but remember to always drink responsibly!
