Back To School In Fort Lauderdale
Over 250,000 students in the Metropolitan Fort Lauderdale returned to school today. Many on the nearly 12,000 school buses that transported most of the students to their respective Broward County schools.
The start of the school year was met with very few incidents and things were rather smooth compared to the last few days we had here in South Florida due to Tropical Storm Fay. The earlier power outages that affected many homes in the Fort Lauderdale area were not an issue as Florida Power & Light was able to restore electricity at all schools in the area in time for today’s openings.
In conjunction with the start of the school year is the commencement of a new policy enacted into law regarding bullies!
The School Board of Broward County approved the first school district Anti-Bullying Policy in the State of Florida. The policy, which was adopted on July 22 of this year, was designed by the District’s Office of Prevention Programs and Student Support Services, under the Safe Schools Healthy Students Grant initiative.
“Bullying” means systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students or employees.
I like the “Anti-Bullying” Law and I hope it makes our schools systems safer for our children. Speaking of safety, as children are back in school, please be aware and cautious while driving today especially as the students leave the school grounds for the trek back to their Fort Lauderdale homes.
