“Miami Is America’s Worst City To Be A Sports Fan”

Is Miami America's Worst Sports City?

Wait A Minute…You Can’t Insult Our Sports Teams That Way, Or Can You?

Recently Forbes Magazine has dubbed Miami the “Worst City In America For Sports Fans”. Now just hold on there. We may cry and moan about a lot of things about our local sports teams. We may dream of the next Dan Marino, we may long for Shaq to be rumbling up and down the hardwood and we may lament that the dismantling of the World Champion Marlins was a slap in the face, and we may wonder if “The U” is ever going to regain national prominence and we may even complain about the super high ticket prices, but does that mean we live in the worst place to be a sports fan?

Listen, when you guys are shoveling snow in Lambeau Field in December to watch the Packers, we’re sipping Mojitos in flip flops! You can’t beat that! And if we want to watch a baseball game in the heat of a pennant race, we can sit anywhere we want in the stadium.

Forbes says that with a $38,632 median household income for the greater Miami area, which is woefully the fifth-lowest of the 29 markets, coupled with a $292.50 price tag for a family of four to see a game, Miami is the worst economic deal for sports fans anywhere.

Ok, so now let’s look at their numbers. I am not sure how they calculated that median income but yeah..that would be a problem if the sports teams only drew their audience from the City of Miami. Obviously Miami has some severely depressed areas that really skew those numbers and Forbes does not account the fans who come in from Fort Lauderdale, and other points north, Weston and other points west…using Miami’s economic numbers would be like using Palm Beach’s numbers when you are calculating the household income for West Palm Beach. I think you would have just a bit of disparity.

On the other hand, when Forbes states that we here in South Florida are being forced to endure mediocrity on the field and inanity in the corporate offices that’s another thing and they might just be right.

Last year, as Forbes correctly states, our Heat and Dolphins combined to go 16-82 during the 2007-08 season. That’s not acceptable by any means.

According to Forbes, Miami now ranks worse than San Diego, Indianapolis, New York and Cincinnati.

With the advent of a new football season upon us, and with high hopes in tow, let’s see if our teams can make Forbes eat its words. At least we can hope.
