21^stAnnual Las Olas Art Fair Offers $15 Million Of Art On October 4^th & 5^th. It seems like just yesterday that I met art fair Impresario Howard Alan.  He had produced his first art fair for the Las Olas Association and it was a big hit with the visitors and merchants… Here it is 21 years later, and he not only produces three art fairs a year on Las Olas, he’s become known as “The King of Art”.

As the country’s largest promoter of art and craft shows, Howard Alan Events has produced some of the nation’s finest juried art shows, including more than 40 venues throughout the country each year such as the Downtown Aspen Art Festival, Beaver Creek Art Festival, Downtown Naples Art Festival, Chicago Tribune Magnificent Mile Art Festival, Las Olas Art Fair, and many more.

Whether you are a casual art enthusiast, festival-goer or avid collector, there is something for everyone.  From $25 hand-designed earrings and $50 prints, to $20,000 metal sculptures, original artwork will cover a full spectrum of mediums, including paintings, sculptures, photography, glass, ceramics, mixed media and more.

Unlike a typical gallery setting, all of the artists will be at the festival with their artwork, giving visitors the opportunity to talk with the artists, learn about their art and what inspires them, and of course purchase or commission original pieces.

In 1976, I was a high school sophomore who was allowed to attend my first concert. What a concert it was. 30+ years later I remember that night as if it was last night.

I remember the drive to the arena. I remember walking into the huge abyss of the halll and looking down from the top of the concourse into the dark pavilion that on the previous night I had watched a hockey game. This surely could not be the same place. It even smelled much different. It wasn’t until years later in college that I realized just what that smell was!

Anyway…the lineup that night was amazing. A new up and coming band called 38 Special opened the show and blew us northerners away with a heaping helping of deep fried southern rock. I was hooked forever. Following that night Marshall Tucker, the Outlaws, and of course the Charlie Daniels Band became my heroes. Lest I not forget, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Next up was a band trying to make it in America with the release of their first album. I had not heard of this band before and most of my friends waiting for the headliner to appear made their way up the long flight of stairs to score us some “refreshments”…that’s greek for BEER! I know I said I was a sophomore but the drinking age was 18 back then and we had a buddy with us who had a fake ID. (didn’t we all know that kid back then who could get us beer…he was the one who got the free ticket to the concert)

While everyone went to get some beer, I stayed. This was my first concert and I wasn’t going to miss any of it. Besides my mom paid for the tickets which meant I had free beer all night.

Then the lights went down and very quickly I was introduced to arena rock and just what a vocal superman meant to a rockband. Lou Gramm and his new band Foreigner were amazing. Goose bumps..literally goose bumps arose when he sang the song “The Damage is Done”. Many know that first album for songs like “Cold As Ice”, but if you ever saw Foreigner live and heard Gramm sing “The Damage Is Done“, you knew this man had met with some serious heartache. Don’t worry Lou! She’s most assuredly eating her heart out now.

But finally, the appetizers were finished. It was time to see the band we had been waiting for. About to take the stage was a band whose lead singer seemed to have a voice that had no bounds, a guitarist whose axe seemingly shredded you from start to finish on every song, and a drummer who made you think of Bonham. There was only one “Bonzo” but this guy was eerily reminiscent.

The band? Boston. For nearly 2 hours I was mesmerized by the spectacle before me. I remember the set list, I remember the banter between songs and I remember leaving the arena hoarse that night from screaming and singing for the entire show.

What a night…what a band!

Boston was an instant hit. The debut album, Boston, released in August 1976, was an enormous success. The record still ranks as the best-selling debut album in U.S. history with over 17 million copies sold.

Boston hailing from the city of the same name achieved its most notable successes during the 1970s and 1980s. Founded and led by guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter, and producer Tom Scholz, the band has continued to be a mainstay of classic rock since the time I saw them on stage that night in 1976.

Boston’s best-known works include the singles “More than a Feeling”, “Peace of Mind”, “Long Time”, “Don’t Look Back” and “Amanda”. They have sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

Gloria Estefan’s family fled Cuba for Miami in 1959. She began her singing career in 1975 with the group Miami Sound Machine, and four years later married the group’s keyboardist, Emilio Estefan. After several Spanish-language albums the group began releasing material in English, their breakthrough album coming in 1985 with Primitive Love.

Estefan went solo with even greater success; with Emilio Estefan as her producer and promoter, she became for a time America’s leading Latin recording artist. A true entrepreneur, with the Bongos, the 7 restaurant chain and a few hotels, Estefan has amassed a net worth fortune estimated at over $500 Million dollars.

In a rare appearance, the five time Grammy award winner will hold the concert to benefit school systems in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

With a career that has seen 13 albums, 5 Grammy awards, and over 90 million albums sold worldwide, Estefan will have plenty of material to choose from to perform.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. on Oct. 24. Tickets go on sale on Aug. 15 at noon. Undoubtedly this show will sell out so make sure you get your tickets early!

While in the Fort Lauderdale real estate area or if you are looking to relocate here, one of the favorite pastimes of our residents is golfing. With many great courses located in close proximity to just about any residential community in the area, those future residents wanting to get in a few rounds will have no problem finding their favorite course.

We have many courses here. While some are free to the general public, many are private or semi-private. Some provide membership if you live in a golf community while some require you to be sponsored.

The courses are spread throughout the metropolitan Fort Lauderdale real estate area. Many of the courses have great acess and comparatively low green fees.

Obviously our climate and location make for unmatched settings and year-round play. Although we know the summer months can be very hot…so be careful.

The Fort Lauderdale real estate market has more than 40 courses offering options for players of all skill levels and includes exclusive private clubs, and premier municipal facilities maintained to the highest standards.

There are also resort courses designed by golf course pros and legends such as Joe Lee, Bruce Devlin, Robert von Hagge, Rees Jones, Raymond Floyd, Robert Trent Jones, and Tom and George Fazio.

One of the ways to enjoy golfing in the Fort Lauderdale real estate market is to live in a golf course community. Living adjacent to a golf course has its obvious benefits.

Presently there are nearly 1,300 homes and condo / townhomes that are on the market in or adjacent to golf courses with prices ranging from $200,000 to $3 Million.
