24th annual Las Olas Art Fair

24th Annual Las Olas Art Fair PartI edition takes place January 7th & 8th, 2012 Saturday & Sunday 10:00 AM- 5:00 PM on Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.

It seems like just yesterday that I met art fair Impresario Howard Alan.  He had produced his first art fair for the Las Olas Association and it was a big hit with the visitors and merchants… Here it is 24 years later, and he not only produces three art fairs a year on Las Olas, he’s become known as “The King of Art”.

As the country’s largest promoter of art and craft shows, Howard Alan Events has produced some of the nation’s finest juried art shows, including more than 40 venues throughout the country each year such as the Downtown Aspen Art Festival, Beaver Creek Art Festival, Downtown Naples Art Festival, Chicago Tribune Magnificent Mile Art Festival, Las Olas Art Fair, and many more.

The group’s founders personally select unique, culture rich cities for their show locations providing a complete out-door experience unmatched by other festivals. Each show is unique with works of new and upcoming artists as well as established artists.

This year, the Las Olas Art Fair takes place on Las Olas Boulevard between S.E. 6th Avenue and S.E. 11th Avenue, where the streets are closed to vehicular traffic. In those two days, Las Olas is transformed into a first-class outdoor art showcase complete with 150 artists and $15 million in artwork available for sale. Admission is free and open to the public.

“We are looking forward to painting the town with 15 million dollars of art,” said The King of Art Howard Alan.  Produced by Howard Alan Events, the Las Olas Art Fair is one of the top outdoor art festivals in the country.

In order to ensure a superior art event with only the highest quality of original artwork, the Las Olas Art Fair is a juried art show in which all of the local and national artists have been hand-selected from hundreds of applicants.

Over 100,000 people visit the festival!

Whether you are a casual art enthusiast, festival-goer or avid collector, there is something for everyone.  From $25 hand-designed earrings and $50 prints, to $20,000 metal sculptures, original artwork will cover a full spectrum of mediums, including paintings, sculptures, photography, glass, ceramics, mixed media and more.

Unlike a typical gallery setting, all of the artists will be at the festival with their artwork, giving visitors the opportunity to talk with the artists, learn about their art and what inspires them, and of course purchase or commission original pieces.

Howard Alan Events is the country’s largest promoter of art and craft shows, boasting more than 40 venues throughout the country each year such as the Downtown Aspen Art Festival, Beaver Creek Art Festival, Downtown Naples Art Festival, and the Chicago Tribune Magnificent Mile Art Festival.  The group’s founders personally select unique, culture rich cities for their show locations providing a complete out-door experience unmatched by other festivals. Each show is unique with works of new and upcoming artists as well as established artists.

Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both days.  For additional information on the Las Olas Art Fair and other Howard Alan Events art and craft shows across the country, visit the Art Festival website.

Third Annual Martorano’s Masters Meatball Eating Championship

meatball eating contestThird Annual Martorano’s Masters Meatball Eating Championship

This might just be the grossest event ever! So are you going to attend? Maybe enter?

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, in association with Major League Eating, is teaming up with Steve Martorano, The “Godfather of Italian-American Cooking,” to present the third annual “Martorano’s Masters Meatball Eating Championship” on Saturday, December 10 from 4 – 6 p.m.

Guests will have the opportunity to witness some of the world’s most popular competitive eaters in action as they skillfully devour Martorano’s award-winning meatballs for a chance to win a share of $3,000 cash.

The winner ate over 6 pounds of meatballs last year. I love meatballs but this is a bit much for me. So are you going to enter? Might be some easy cash for you!

I think that Cafe Martorano has some of the best Italian food in Fort Lauderdale but eating 6 pounds of meat in a couple of minutes might just be a bit more than I care to take on. How about you?

Important Public Service Announcement for the Fourth of July Spectacular

Spectator vessels should not anchor on a coral reef. If a vessel anchors in the Elkhorn/Staghorn coral critical habitat, it should anchor over a sandy bottom that is free from coral or Johnson’s sea grass.

All vessels should maintain a lookout for endangered species, especially sea turtles and manatees. Vessels should proceed at a safe speed, especially at night, in order to avoid striking any marine mammal or sea turtle.

Enjoy the fireworks shows, drive safely, and be sure to hydrate — it’s going to be wicked hot. All of the restaurants on the beach will be participating so there will be plenty of ice cold Corona’s…my 4th of July beverage of choice!

Don’t Miss Fort Lauderdale’s Second Annual Riverwalk Burger Battle

Who doesn’t like a great, big, juicy burger? I’m not talking about the pre-packaged fare you get from Mickie D’s or Burger King. I’m talking the kind of burger that takes two hands to eat made from the best ground beef, or better yet, ground sirloin in town.

Well if you know what I’m talking about and want to get your hands on some real mouth watering grade-a burgers then you’re not going to want to miss this event. Trust me, after attending the recent Sips And Sliders event I can personally tell you that these chef’s have it going on!

Story continues below...

Riverwalk Trust will host Fort Lauderdale’s second annual Burger Battle Presented by Publix Apron’s Cooking School on Friday, May 13, 2011 from 7 to 10 p.m. on the Riverside Hotel Lawn, 620 E. Las Olas Blvd. in Downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Some of the city’s top restaurants will compete, showcasing their creativity and grilling skills to about 1,000 guests. The event will bring together local employees, residents and businesses for an evening of gourmet burger creations, cocktails and fun, while raising funds to support the Riverwalk Trust’s mission of building and nurturing a vibrant community connected by the New River.

Riverwalk Burger Battle

For a $40 donation (prepaid online), attendees will receive an array of burger samples from local restaurants, plus three drink tickets to be used for any Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, Jack Daniel’s Lynchburg Lemonade or Bud Light. They’ll vote for their favorite burger, enjoy complimentary VOSS water and view a local celebrity slider eating contest sponsored by Krystal. A local band will perform live and a French fry bar will be offered.

Guests will enjoy burger bites from Capital Grille, Morton’s The Steakhouse, ROK:BRGR, Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill, Johnny V Restaurant, Big City Tavern, Pelican Landing at Pier Sixty-Six Marina, Chef Allen’s Burger Bar, Riverside Hotel, Tarpon Bend, Timpano Chophouse & Martini Bar, Blue Plate at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Rare Las Olas, Hard Rock Café and last year’s winner Georgie’s Alibi.

A panel of local celebrity judges will honor one restaurant with “Best Burger in Fort Lauderdale” bragging rights. Another eatery will be chosen as the “Fan Favorite” by Burger Battle attendees. BIG 105.9 afternoon drive on-air radio personality Doc Reno will host the event.

Burger Battle II event supporters include Publix Apron’s Cooking School, Krystal, Riverside Hotel, Premier Beverage, Jack Daniel’s, Barefoot Wines & Bubbly, Stephen’s Distributing, Bud Light, BIG 105.9 FM, 93.9 MIA, Best Rental, The City of Fort Lauderdale, Gold Coast magazine, Scott Barfield Photography, Intown411, Southfloridafoodandwine.com, Las Olas Lifestyle, Edco Awards & Specialties, Inspiri24 Design Studios, Quinn Pro Quo and Go Riverwalk magazine.

Sounds like a real good time for the whole family and the Riverside Hotel lawn is a great setting on a Friday night. For that matter, anywhere on Las Olas is fine with me on a Friday night.
